Winter’s Magic and Spring’s Promise at Jasper Lake Resort

Early February at Jasper Lake Resort brings quiet magic to the Northwoods. I’m reminded of the winters spent in the Bay House during the 90s, where our only warmth came from two wood-burning stoves. The old cookstove was more than just a source of heat; it was the heart of our home, drawing Cindy, Joan, myself, and our two loyal hunting dogs, Ike the Yellow Lab and Rommel the Weimaraner pointer, to its side. I remember that on Groundhog Day in 1996, the dogs abandoned their cherished spot by the stove for a sunlit patch on the floor, signaling the first hint of spring. Though true Springtime was still weeks away, that sunlight stirred a longing for outdoor adventures beyond the daily hauling of firewood.
As the days grow longer and the sunshine strengthens, the Northwoods invite exploration. There’s an abundance of ways to embrace the season:
Cross-Country Skiing: The Ely area boasts a network of finely groomed trails, easily accessible from our two winterized vacation rentals. For those who prefer forging their own path, frozen lakes and remote logging trails offer endless opportunities for adventure. Jasper Lake itself is a favorite for backcountry skiing, and several nearby lakes provide similar experiences.
Snowshoeing & Hiking: Well-packed USFS trails, including the Blackstone and Secret trails, are perfect for day hikes. Snowshoers can enjoy breaking new trails across lakes and through the woods, discovering the quiet beauty of winter.
Ice Fishing: With the Minnesota trout season open, anglers flock to area lakes for
stocked stream trout and native lake trout. Tofte Lake is an easy day trip, while Snowbank Lake—just seven miles away—is renowned for lake trout. Late February and March are prime times for bluegills and black crappies, with many lakes and rivers nearby supporting healthy populations. Fishing for northern pike with tip ups baited with live sucker minnows is very popular this time of year. There are some big pike in our area lakes!
Dog Sledding: Ely is celebrated as both the Canoe Capitol and the Sled Dog Capitol of the USA. Adventurous day trips with local sled dog teams are a must—just be sure to make a reservation to secure your spot.
Whether you’re seeking the thrill of a new outdoor pursuit or the comfort of familiar traditions, Jasper Lake Resort and the surrounding wilderness offer a memorable escape as winter gives way to spring.
