Ely is a winter paradise with endless trails through a frozen network of pristine lakes, snow capped forests and northern bogs that all call for you to explore by dog team. Our area lakes get hard and thick with quartz colored ice. The forest is inundated with snow and the landscape becomes pure white. Everywhere you look the deep green spires of the evergreens are poking through the white winter blanket. This landscape is perfect for the greatest of all winter adventures: a sled dog trip through the lake country with a hardworking Ely dog musher. Full day and shorter trips are available to Jasper Company guests staying at the Jasper Guest House, A Stay Inn Ely and Jasper Lofts. Let us help you make your winter trip to Ely an incredible adventure.
Imagine standing on the back of a colorful dog sled, dressed in layers of wool and polar fleece. Your cheeks become cherry red and your eyebrows get frosted white. There in front of you are nine eager silver grey huskies all harnessed up and straining at the reins held in your hands. Your guide and head musher is perched on the stern of another sled next to yours and suddenly yells ‘Hike’. You’re instantly off with a jolt, heading down the expanse of white that during the summer months is a sky blue lake. You can feel the huskies strength as they streak down the packed trail with incredible energy. You see their breath rise in the cold air forming a single cloud that passes just over your head and you hear the steady squeak of the sled runners sliding on the ice that lies just under your feet. You enjoy the toasty warmth of the multi-layered clothing system perfected by the generations of Ely area winter travelers. Your broad smile warms the cold of the morning air on your face.
At the end of this perfect day the Jasper Company will have warm comfortable lodging waiting for you. Your group will share the day’s stories over a hot cup of coffee next to the fire at either A Stay Inn Ely or the Jasper Guest House.
